Tonight on the television the manager of cains brewery in liverpool stated that beer sales dropped as soon as the smoking ban came in.
a couple of pubs i use to visit on my travels have shut soon after the ban
if you smoke it is better to buy a few cans and stay in .you don't have to worry about getting home safe and you can watch what you want on the television.
you don't have to stand outside in the rain

Most pubs and clubs are out-pricing themselves.......I know they get a third of their beer stock free and discount of up to 25pcent for wines and spirits. Yet, some charge 300pcent over cost price. They often have temporary/part-time staff so wages are minimal.
Either they down-size profits or lose customers. Most bars have 'one armed bandits' (sheer profit) and even the cig machine is profitable.

There are many reasons:
1. The economy - people are feeling the pinch and aren't spending as much
2. Drink / drive - people won't drive to pubs and taxis are more expensive now
3. Cheap booze in supermarkets
4. Land prices - pubs are being pulled down to make way for housing
5. Trouble. Many 'decent' people don't want to go out drinking at night for fear of getting into fights and witnessing other bad behaviour.
But pubs were closing long before the smoking ban, as were breweries. M&B sold off their large brewery in Birmingham 5 years ago to a housing company; Davenports sold out to Carlsberg in 1992 and the Birmingham brewery was sold for housing develpment.
In 2005, 26 pubs a month were closing:

I don't smoke, but it's a ridiculous ban. When people smoked in pubs and clubs, they were full. Now you're lucky to find a dozen people in some places. Also, a lot of these places've turned into all but restaurants, so the traditional places, where folk used to have a few pints, a ciggie, play pool, darts, listen to some music - they're fast disappearing, but that's what people want - a social meeting place where they can relax for a bit. If people don't like smoke, that's fair enough. They should have smoking, and non-smoking pubs.
