many thanks for link
Is there no Listener thread this week?
Thanks, I couldn't see for looking.
Have all the answers and the four words but can't see the wood for the trees on what needs highlighing. Any directions ( pardon the pun ) or hints welcome. Shall keep looking but can't find the "obvious" ones.
I have also been staring with my cockney mouth open at the grid looking for inspiration. I have only 16 of the extra letters and 2 consecutive ones do not seem sensible.
I'm in exactly the same position as novalis.

DocHH, whereas it makes sense to read the excess letters in the across clues in clue order, the same cannot be said regarding the down clues!
novalis/crofter

It is very difficult to give a hint without giving the full details. However, concentrate on the middle of the grid and don't think in terms of 'rose' being a flower.
Thanks for that GRM. I've not been thinking of the rose as a flower but in directional terms. I'll have another look round the centre.
novalis

You are on the right lines. One further hint. 20 squares in total need to be highlighted.
Thanks again GRM. Shall keep looking. Are we talking across, down or diagonal or a mixture?
What, do you want me to do the crossword for you!!!??? :-)

Four squares adjacent to the centre one and then a circle further out.
Thanks GRM. I always forget to look for the circles!!!
PS Looking at it it should have been obvious. Thanks again.
Snap!
