Thanks, 'on the quiet' would seem to be the letter 'P' but I can't get the rest either.

Slip is the answer to 31 Across (pils backwards), and even given the Telegraph's almost pathological penchant for recycling the same solution to different puzzles in the same issue, I can't thin you're going to get the same answer twice to adjacent clues.

Unless they're getting very cunning....

So, I went for snip, even though the clue makes no sense.

Nevertheless, slip seems to be the obvious answer.

Although I don't have this crossword, the other clue ( 31a ) has been answered as 'spin' (ie 'nips' backwards).

I had this discussion last night with catron and think that Catron has the right of it with SPIN for 31a NIPS backwards.
The argument was that Pils is singular while Nips is plural and the clue quotes drinkS.
I have put SNIP for 26d, but agree that it is not a very good clue.

Not sure about grammar in foreign languages, but pretty certain that "pils" is both plural & singular, as you would order two pils, not two pils's.

Frankly, I think these two clues are a disgrace, because both are pretty ambiguous.
