Many thanks for your replies, I thought Martial Arts of some sort was the sporting one but had not been able to confirm.
The ice cream one is contentious, Disregarding references to Nero and Marco Polo having eaten it I have recollections of Adam Hart-Davis' What the Victorians did for us referring to the penny lick, but that could be any time between 1840 -1901. There are refences to American ice cream parlours in 1861 & 1869, and I have just found a reference to Charles I having it which I will try fo find out more.
