many thanks for link
Hello everyone - not doing too badly an solving the clues but would welcome a hint as to whether the muddling of the non-asterisked clues results in a word, or just gobble-gook?

Many thanks

Devadolly
Hi Devadolly!
Gobblygook with one exception.
Keep batting away and you'll get there.
Thank you for that Novalis! You have cheered me up - that's a nice strong life-line disappeared to be left with only a few tiny straws floating past in the flood water!!!!!!!!!!

Plod, plod......................................

Regards

Hi Midazolam!!
How's fatherhood? - Hope you are getting more sleep now!!
Are you any nearer sumitting your own EV?
Hi Devadolly!
Begin by looking for intersecting words which have only one letter in common. This will help you to get started. Also look at any "On this day" section. I'm sure a very famous sporting "first" will appear there.

all is well paternally - sleeping much better (both that is)

i am also struggling with the centre of this grid given the amount of jumbled entries

on i plod....will see re: EV
Hi Midazolam and Devadolly!

Hope you're managing to unscramble the jumble. It's a matter of trial and error.
To help a little:-
2d is "jumbled" but becomes an actual word.
19a The middle 4 letters remain unaltered and form part of the 22 contiguous letters which need to be highlighted. Those letters form an appropriate shape. I gave a hint in a previous posting by writing "keep batting".
Novalis

I think you are the compiler of most of these blessed crosswords - well at least the ones that are so devious!! Many thanks for the clues they are much appreciated and I will keep plodding.

Regards
I have the man and I have the number, but I have somehow gone awry in the bottom right hand corner.
18ac Lecturer and physician treated ten -- I have "cloned" which doesn't fit the clue
Similarly 18d Sailor told to go away -- I have SENADB
and 16ac Wine cellar society achieves great fame --- I have ASVTLA.
Why is 21a panada ? (Pitch in a Spanish pot )
Two or three of these letters are misplaced I am sure. The rest of the puzzle has taken ages to complete with some multiple changes of letters to get them right. Any help or hints in this final straight will be greatly appreciated.
21a is pinata ... a tilde over the n.
The letters for 16a are ALSTUV.
A bit of help without giving too much away at this stage. I too put a letter in the wrong place, and it all went haywire. Got it now.

Ulysses, when you helped me a while back with the President's heads ... I won the prize! Let's hope I can return the favour here!

Thank you MatyadaLover, although that throws me out even more !
I had sallet for 13dn but now the second letter has to be a "u".
Pinata (I still do not see the methodology of the clue), now also throws out my letters for "brainy" though it does help me get "absent" for 18dn .

My brain hurts for the moment !! I'll try again later when the cells have cooled down a little !
If it helps 18ac is DOCENT.

I too know who the Sportsman is and the relevant shape to be made in the grid.

But, as I cannot seem to solve 9ac and 7dn - which also means I cannot fill in 7ac yet - I am a bit stumped.

Hi Rollo!
For 7a think Shakespeare (MSND ) and 9d first part is French for "I" then a verb meaning to suit.
Sorry Rollo that should have been 9a - but still same hint.
7d you are looking for a plural of a Greek letter.
Hi MatydaLover!
Haven't heard from you for a while. Hope you're well. I haven't won as much as usual backing against Glamorgan this season.

Hi Devadolly!
I may have a devious mind when it comes to setting "innocuos" general knowledge quiz questions but I'm certainly not devious enough to compile an EV.
Question Author
crikey - it seems that others are having battles with the jumbles too

i have now finished the grid - i dont get pinata either but it is a spanish pot

thanks novalis for the hint re: middle 4 of 19 - and batting - but still dont see what to highlight! pole and gear stand out in the corners but that gets me nowhere
Withour spelling it out:-

The "theme" happened on 31 August 1968 in Swansea. It was the first time this had happened, but it has happened at least once since.
Question Author
thanks rollo, but i would never have got that in six million years - another failed EV for me

just reiterates that the EV can be tougher than certain listeners

let us see if we get a response from the editor from the Telegraph. If not I will post the letter i sent here.

The troublesome "pinata" ... using Chambers, pin=pitch, at=in (need to look up "in") and a.

Hello Novalis, glad you didn't win quite so much against Glamorgan ... I'm thinking that I'll buy a ticket for next year's first day of the Ashes. But the the way the ECB are running things I fear that the only international cricket will be by multiple television subscription on a 5 over match played on Mars. Or maybe a ticket will cost 10,000 a session.

Got married in July ... distracting, but didn't completely stop the solving, though.
P.S. ... everyone will recall Glamorgan's essentail part in the famous sporting event? Without the team's efforts, and Malcom in particular, there would have been no theme to EV 826!
