Well the easy bit is that One hundred is a Ton!

That presumably is the definition. As to the wordplay ?

If you got a hundred that would certainly merit a dintinction

ton = fashionable style or distinction (Oxford Dictionary of English)
Haut ton or bon ton (from the French) used to be a common way of describing the 'upper crust' and was frequently contracted to just "the Ton" when describing "Society"

Thanks sedge. I thought of Ton as fashionable but the Chambers definition is 'People of Fashion' so I hesitated.

Not the best clue ever!
