Is there a thread this week? If so, I haven't been able to find it and am very stuck on 12 a and 14a and would welcome any help. Both are thematic and my thinking is too woolly to cope.

Hello Copelander, this is a real beastie, and I will sheepishly admit to being stumped on more than 12 and 14ac. I couldn't find any thread for it either.
Question Author
well, DoccHH I can help with all other parts of the grid
The annoying thing is that i have the "centrally placed character" even though he/she/it is based in the southwest!. Are 1ac and 38ac thematic! Does convict=lag?
Question Author
Yes, 1 ac and 38ac are both thematic and I presume you are thinking about 1 ac convict is lag.
A teacher put on my report years ago that I could be a woolly thinker. This proved it.
Sorry DocHH
12 a is an anagram of bride Stripped of its first and last letters and gave.

14 a is, I hope, not a breed but a general word for a two year old creature. Could be wrong though. Either way it begins with T.
Still plodding on! I thought the reference to bindweed in 14a was a bit tenuous, and that 12a was missing an anagram indicator. Top left hand corner still looks a bit empty, and 1a is causing real grief, do I need to have INDUCTANCE after the convict.
Question Author
Thank you Novalis,I had miscounted and was convinced 12a was thematic. However all now complete!
Hi DocHH

For 1a you need lag round the usual indication of nothing then inductance then a three letter word ( verb ) for brown..
Question Author
I realise this has already been answered by Novalis, but, yes you do need inductancefor the 4th letter. I see there is another, much less subtle, thread on this crossword on a'bank.
Thank you Novalis and Copelander, that top left corner is looking healthier now! A break from staring at the clues was a big help too, spent this morning as a Recorder for the local Talking Newspaper.
Hi Copelander!

Have just looked at the other thread. It's only marginally less subtle. ( The operation to remove my tongue from where it's firmly lodged in my cheek is tomorrow! )

Hi DocHH!

Hope you've now cracked it. Keep up the good work with your local Talking Newspaper.
EV is now eminently do-able. Have been doing the local Talking Newspaper thing as a Reader for 15 years, and Certificatedly as such. Only recently have I become a Recorder. I find it a very worthy cause.
Hope we've all finished now.
And Novalis, I hope your op goes ok!!
Hello everyone

Please, please can we just have one link to the EV, those of us who flounder and muddle whilst trying our feeble best, need to grasp and small straw floating past in the torrent. Confusing us like this is a very mean trick!

Regards

Devadolly

PS Have put it on the other site too.....
Just keep that shot-gun pointing down-wards!! Wouldn't want to see an obituary section on AB!!
Question Author
Have just come home from a book launch for a coffee table book for a local area issued by a company our daughter works for. A different sort of evening and I didn't think of crosswords even once! Goodnight all !!
Question Author
DocHH What's the difference between a Reader and a Recorder?
The team is 1 Recorder and 3 Readers. A Reader just reads articles from the newspaper, a Recorder operates the computer based recording equipment, switching off input as a reader finishes an article and on another input when the next Reader starts, monitoring and adjusting sound levels of the three Readers and the time elapsed etc.
