Thanks, that makes sense. I thought it might be 'cardes', a variant spelling of 'cards' (carding being also an old term like 'spooning'), but could not find 'DE' as a drug!

We all do it, but don't be misled by apparent connections with other rugmaking districts or anything else thrown up by Google.

It's important to keep sight of (a) the wordplay and (b) Chambers as the standard reference here, for all but proper nouns.
