27a One who takes the spoils or plunder (6)

R?I?E?

I have two possible solutions here.

REIVER or RAIDER.

I prefer REIVER because Chambers gives a definition of REIVE as to plunder or rob, whereas for RAID it just gives "to make a raid on" or "to go on a raid".

Does anybody else agree with my thoughts?

27 raider
It appears to be open to interpretation, and the setter may be expecting either possibility.
I must admit to entering raider initially without giving it further thought, but I agree that reiver is an interesting alternative.
As I don't bother entering the completed crosswords, it won't affect me, but will look with interest at the solution when published! :O)
Like sarumite I entered Raider without giving it a second thought. The big difference is that I entered it online on the Telegraph Clued-Up website, which prompts you if you have any wrong answers, so I don't have to wait until next week to find out !!

Well I'm Cumbrian and I automatically thought Reiver (Border Reivers)

Looks like they want RAIDER then. Thanks for that BigDave.

I could not find one for the first letter of 27a either. I have just completed the grid with the missing letter.

Thank-you. Bloody-minded so & so that I am, I tend to think REIVER would the proper answer to the question as posed, but is obviously not the one they're looking for.

Does anyone ever get the impression that "they" get the answers wrong themselves sometimes? I mean, apart from when "they" get their Nimrods mixed up with their AWACs, inaugurate J. Edgar Hoover as president of the USA (or was it appoint Herbert Hoover as director of the FBI?) & kill-off Stirling Moss in 1962?

No, you're right; I'm just getting paranoid.
Re: Inquisitor 108
Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I think I can rest easy now!
