12 across being protein and 14 across being counterfeit . Strange language we have isn't it ?

When people speak about the i before e so-called �rule', they often forget to add "when the sound involved is ee". Thus thief fits the pattern, because it is pronounced theef, but neigh does not because it is pronounced nay.
There are other exceptions apart from those mentioned in the question such as weird, seize, the name Keith and so on.
All part of the rich pageant rather than the strangeness of our wonderful language in my view.

I would have to agree with the questioner, TCL, that we have a 'strange' language if the plural of intricacy - or papacy, fallacy, candidacy etc - was, indeed, spelt with CEI!
And, of course, the relevant letters in scientific aren't pronounced ee.

thanks for this post!! i have always been good at english and a very good speller - however this one really got me and i am very intrigued by it! you have just made me realise this fact, even though i always use the I before E rule..
