I am still wondering whether anyone can explain the wordplay in this - 'Actor losing bits of wing in rally' ?IVEN
It could be Niven Liven Riven Given - but why?
Thanks

I am wondering if it is LIVEN If someone rallies they liven up.
Actor = Niven. Loses the N and gains L (left wing)) Just a thought
Should have said you have to read it as 'losing bits' and then 'wing in'.
C: a worthy thought, but why is N "bits"?

Oh, well, as this is the March puzzle at the Crossword Center (or Centre), I figure I have 29 more days for inspiration to strike.
How's this:

to rally is to ENLIVEN; a wing (as of a building) is an ELL, so "bits" (pieces) are E & L; lose those from ENLIVEN to get the actor NIVEN.

Huh? Huh?

Yeah, I'm not that convinced either.

Thanks dr b and Christiana (Perseverer too) I am fairly sure Niven must be the solution as nothing else convincing occurs but the EL coming out, as bits of ELL is stretching it isn't it? However, dr b, yours is obviously the best answer - thanks again.
