Just completed it with a breathy sigh of relief. This took us about twice as long as usual with those six 'other' definitions causing considerable moaning until we had got wind of what was going on. I wonder how people without some sort of search engine find that other thematic item (even if it is in a logical place in relation to all the others). Clever, this one, but almost too difficult - rather more difficult than the easier Listeners wasn't it?
Just noticed a problem in the on-line version - be careful if you are mailing an entry to the Spectator, as the number has not been updated in the text below! It should, of course, read, 'Entries to: Crossword 1906 ... etc.
Well spotted Ruthrobin ! 34 across was only the third clue I solved, so I must admit the theme turned up early on for me. I know some blow hot and cold about these puzzles, but I enjoyed this one - thanks Lavatch !
Hi
I've finished the Xwd as such (it was a breeze), but am finding it difficult to locate the extra 5 letter W*** in the grid. Any clues to where I might find it would be appreciated
Cheers
Chambers defines your missing word as ' the South East or less exactly, East wind'. It's from Greek mythology and is a variant spelling of the Latin name. Do you want the letter it starts with as a further clue?
I ought to be more diligent in following these threads. I read Ruthrobin's comment about the submission details a few days after posting my entry and now I can't remember what I put on the envelope! I enjoyed the puzzle, but I'd be a bit peeved if my envelope went straight into the wrong bin.
