2ac
what does it mean. i have a new maths teacher and he was talking so quicly that i couldnt understand him and i didnt have time to talk to him at the end of the lesson. but he said you use it to work out equations of lines on a graph but all we did in the lesson was work it out the easy way and he said you didn't need this equation for what we are doing but its useful. but useful for what?

I missed a set of brackets. i meant to type
x= (-b(√(b-4ac))/2a
The a, b and c relate to the coefficients a and b and the constant c for an equation in the form ax + bx + c

What's it useful for:
Your equation is called a quadratic. When a car designer is working out how the suspension springs will bounce. If they were too weak you would carry on bouncing long after they started. If they were made too stiff it would make for a very hard ride. So using this formuala with different values may gives the ideal situation.
