29a - little hole for (say) 8, say. (6). -Y-L-T. answer to 8d is thirty. I get the 'little hole' definition, but can't work out the rest
I don't think it's anything to do with 8d. I think it's 8, say, being "ait" or "eyot", both terms for a small island, or "islet", which sounds like eyelet. Hence the two uses of say.

In other words, eyelet sounds like islet, another word for ait/eyot, which sounds like 8 !
