I have managed to solve all the clues and have worked out what the theme is. But I am at a loss to know how 2(7)s, 2(5)s, 3(4)s and 1(2), plus theme phrase (12) add up to 46 and which squares to highlight. Can someone give me a clue please or am I just being bone idle?

There are 4 squares in the grid that are "double counted", in that they each appear in two of the themed items.

Thanks Rollo for the clues. I now have the answers, although having to admit to having to look up the 12 letter answer. Never heard of it but once I had the shape to be filled in thought the 12 letters would spell out something. To think I had to have a dig in the ribs to make things a bit more humorous aafter being a bit thick skulled on this puzzle.
