Susan Boyle world class talent or just a good singer who has been massively over hyped?
19 Answers
I would be interested to hear what others think. I must admit to being a bit disappointed with her voice on last nights BGT, I have have heard other singers that are better and am wondering if her voice is really going to live up to all the hype. Bearing in mind the amount of publicity that she has got and the fact that we do love the underdog, it was guaranteed that she would get through to the final regardless. To be honest I felt that Diversity gave the best performance, their act was superb and really does deserve to be in the final. The little black girl (apologies cannot remember her name) was good, but did not choose the best song to showcase her voice which was a shame. Who do you think was best and the worst last night?

I also noticed that stripper woman fabia got through which is a bit ridiculous.
She has had a make over and now looks only slightly better than when she first appeared at the auditions! Her voice was very flat when she started singing last night, I was wincing initially but then she did get a bit better as she got into her stride. I still was not over impressed though once she had finished. The audience seemed to love it though and so did the judges!
Agree that overall Diversity and SuBo were the best, I think that if Natalie (thank you for the reminder!) was on form, she could have given SuBo a run for her money though.
I cannot think of any reason why Darth Jackson got through as his dancing was just embarrasing. The stripper is going to be awful, when she gets her turn, I cannot for a minute think that the Queen would be pleased to see her perform for her!
My definate favourites at the moment are Diversity and I think that the other dance act Flawless will be pretty special to watch as well!

There has been a lot of media hype, she even made the news last night after she made it to the final!
What was all the flirting with Piers about once she had found she had been voted through? That was verging on embarrasing to watch as well!
I don't really mean to be nasty as I felt that she was nervous last night which probably did not help voice, also she probably got a bit overexcited at getting through, but god knows what she will do if she actually wins it!

This is typical of the show, and its audience - as Paul Potts can confirm.
In opera terms, PP is really not that good, but the 'novelty' factor has got him through - it remains to be seen if he can sustain a career.
Susan Boyle does have a very very good voice, but that is never enough to sustain a career once the 'novelty' factor has worn off - which is very quickly indeed.

I've been a member of various amateur operatic societies for a number of years and know of some women who are far better singers that the "Hairy Angel."
The novelty factor of discovering that this ugly, frumpy, middle aged spinster had a reasonably good, albeit untrained, singing voice seemed to catch everyone by surprise and everything snowballed from there. Once the novelty wears off, so will Susan's appeal and she'll most likely slide back into oblivion.
Let's face it, you won't see her on the X Factor, will you? But although she was a bit shaky due to nerves the other night, the hype surrounding her may carry her to BGT success.

I agree, Susan's got a good voice, but not a great one. The hype has carried her onwards and upwards and she'll probably win it.
I love Diversity (also Flawless) and I really, really wanted Natalie to get through. It's true what Simon said, the wrong song was chosen for her as it didn't show what her voice could do. The audition song was better for her.

As I have mentioned before, there is a UTube of SB singing 'Cry Me A River' for her church's charity CD, and she is wonderful on that - it's a hard song to perform well, and she nails it, as they say on talent shows.
That said, the odds are seriously in favour of her 'novelty' seeing her win, and seriously against anything sustained happening to her in the future.

Thanks for all the responses everyone, most seem to be in agreement that SuBo has a good but not excellent voice, Andy I have not seen the youtube clip, I will watch it, as I am only basing my opinion on what I have seen so far, which may not be very fair to her. I do agree though, that once the novelty has worn off, she may find it difficult to sustain a career.
I watched BGT last night and was pleased to see Flawless get through.
Simon Cowell was in a foul temper last night, I suspect that was because most of the early acts were not his choice and he has been outvoted by his fellow judges. I thought that his comments to Amanda were nasty, she did have a bit of a dumb moment re the escapologist, but there was no need to point it out to her quite so forcefully!
Thanks again for all the viewpoints!

Hi Pink Kittens, I am not sure that the answer is simply jealousy, it has been interesting seeing everyone's opinions coming in.
Although it has not been shown as much on this thread, there obviously is a lot of support for her as well as those who do not rate her. I think the puzzling thing is that she has been massively hyped, appearances on USA tv etc as well as over in the UK. If this had been the first talent show of it's kind then it would have been understandable, but there have been many very good singers appear on these type of programmes who have not had anything like the same level of publicity and that includes Paul Potts who obviously has now earned his place in the spotlight!
Andy I listened to the Cry me a River on YouTube and I agree that her voice is definately better on that song that in the semi final!
Thanks once again for the reponses

The 'success' of Susan Boyle, currently, resides in the disparity between her physical appearance and demeanour, and the lovely noises she makes with her vocal chords.
The 'general public' is a fickle thing and this novelty will soon wear off as it turns its attentions to the new next-best-thing.
I have enjoyed watching her and applaud both her talent (which far outstrips mine) and her courage, but I seriously fear for her personal well-being in the light of all the BGT hoop-la............

Agree with both Cazz and Jackthehat, she obviously has people who love her and those that like myself are wondering what all the fuss is about. I love acts like Diversity, but would not call anyone jealous if they disagreed with me and I am sure there are plenty!
I agree that her appearance has actually helped to make her a success, instead of usually the other way around! As Jackthehat states, once the fuss has died down will she be able to carry this into a career? It will be interesting to see!
