28a. River trial is most demanding. I have D-I-E-T (presuming ---TEST).

I don't normally do The Times crosswords but I need this to finish it! Thanks.

You may be right. I did wonder about Deepest but I have 16d. contuseD, 23d. naomI, 20d. abridgE and 24d. troT.

I've just looked at the crossword....23d is Naomi (her children were slaughtered).... in (reversed) = Ni + O.B.E.

23 down is niobe, not naomi, and so 28a is deepest.
