boys and ear piercing..

so, my 15 year old daughter has her ears pierced a few times.. I don't mind a bit of self-expression and did the same thing when I was her age (although I wear just a classy pair of studs now!).

and now.. my 12 year old son wants his ear pierced. I hate the idea. boy + earring = chav.

double standards? should I stick to my guns, or let him do it and cringe every time I see it?

I really don't like seeing boys/men with earrings :o/

at 12 your still the boss so stick to your guns! if he still wants it done at 18 then so be it.

thanks Chuck.. but his sister is now asking to have her belly button done, which I don't love but don't really mind. I feel such a hypocrite!

and his dad says it's okay, but it's up to me.

If you tell him no then you run the risk of having him rebelling and doing it behind your back, on reflection my mother had a very interesting solution. Telling us how painful it was and how sometimes they can get infected and if we wanted to pay for it ourselves then she might allow it, but if we ended up left with disfiguring scars or painful infections then she would no sympathy for us.

my partner tells me to tell you to bring out a sewing needle a block of ice and a lighter and tell him you will do it for him and to sit back and relax it might hurt a bit lol!

However neither of us have children ourselves so we are merely going on what our parents did to us or what friends have done with their kkids!

If his friends all have their ears pierced he will conform to the group standards rather than your.....and as 15 he'll give up on that and there'll be another to fight.

as long as it's not a face piercing or a tattoo.......it won't scar.

I don't like to see earrings on fellas either. Just seems a bit girlie to me.

I agree that 12 is too young. Mind you, I've seen toddlers in prams with pierced ears. I hate to see that.

I woul dmake him wait until he is atleast 16 to get them done my mum made me wait to have my ears pierced until 13 for the first time and have had them done some more at 18 as she thought it was tacky to have more than one set done. but on boys i don't think they look that good and yes chav does spring to mind for me too!

Also it is illegal by law to pierce a childs navel under the consentual age of sex as touching a child anywhere below the neckline at this age is counted as assault. I once overheard that conversation between a piercer and a woman that wanted her 13 year old to have her belly button done. She asked but is it not ok if i give you my consent? his response was you would give me your consent to lawfully commit an act of sexual assault on your daughter? i believe she hung up after that.

I said NO all the way. BUT boy (29 now ) has multiple tatoos and piercings. Girl 1 had belly button done at 15 by lying about her age ( shop got into a lot of grief from me). Girl 2 has very small tatoo that I did not know about for a long time. Husband hates all piercings and tats as do I . I guess that we bring them up to be independent and then hate it when they have minds of their own !! I have not got pierced ears as they make me cringe.

If it helps i think razzle may be right, my brother and i both got our ears pierced and he took his out a few months later when it did in fact loose its lustre. I kept mine for a very long time but whilst the piercings are still open i rarely wear ear rings lol!

Ah perhaps the law has now changed, it was a few years ago. At the time, the piercer was very emphatic about refusing to do it, and explained it to myself and my friend. i also noticed that the page u forwarded to me is on english law, perhaps it is different for Northern Ireland? either way barry, this is interesting to know. Perhaps i should ask the piercer i learned it from if the law has changed or perhaps different over here?
