Greetings to all EV N & Cers. Raich has given us a gentle workout this week (and is also the composer of yesterday's equally benign Listener). Just a couple of comments: firstly, I wish I had taken earlier note of the warning that there are some proper names. Secondly, am I wrong in thinking that the definition in 27d is inaccurate?

Hello Speravi,
I got stuck for a while in the SW corner. I agree with you, 27d doesn't seem to be correctly defined, Chambers certainly doesn't give the entry that definition.
Google the answer and you'll find that it is a pilgrimage in Iran.
My Chambers 2008 gives it as "the lesser Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca." ... that seems ok.

My 2003 edition does not have the entry.

I assume you have R as the the third letter ... not M?
Good afternoon, all, I don't see the problem with 27d. e is the extra letter, and the entry appears in the red book with the correct definition. Not one of your favoured subjects, DocHH, if memory serves me right.
If I had used the 2008 edition and not 2003 it would have saved me a lot of time trying to find that third letter !
I was temporarily diverted by the possibility of a Western theme emerging from guns, boots and spurs.
Absolutely right Copelander! It looks as if I need to invest in the latest issue of the Big Red Book.

My mistake over 27d - I'm away from home and have access only to the 1988 (!) Chambers, and, as MatydaLover correctly speculated, I had an incorrect third letter. Thanks to all for your clarifying responses.
Hi everyone. Also away from home (for several weeks in fact) and just managed to get it printed off, after a tussle with someone elses borrowed printer, so havent started yet. Alas, no big red book at all, though later in the week I, too, will have access to one circa 1988, though not sure of exact date. A special hello to Devadolly for when she appears.
Been away all weekend and do not seem to have got my EV hat on properly. Filled in the grid, got the 7 definition answers but don't see the connections to the highlit word/words (ie 13 squares. Anyone out there to put me out of my misery?
Wantok, it's really important that you get the extra letters in clue order, then the theme will become obvious and a small leap of EV faith will make it all clear. Any help??
Hi All
DC here I come! Perhaps devadolly at PG are already waiting for me there. Three quarters of the grid populated, NW corner looking decidedly blank like my brain. Have got the extra letter words but I can't see where this is going. No alcohol for me either, so can't drown my sorrow - have an infection so am on antibiotics with very strict no drinking.
OK - have now populated the grid, found the words to highlight and got a link (of sorts) with 1 across, the down light after 19 and the second word form from the extra letters. Haven't a clue about the others. Any hints please?
If you have completed the grid and highlighted the thirteen squares then the puzzle is complete. No need (other than the essential satisfaction) to look for the links. Actually, I have the links for the first and second words from the extra letters, but I am not at all sure about the links for the third.

The first word used to have a connection with Highbury and it took me a while to realise this is no longer the case (I come from Wales where following this pastime doesn't bring too many rewards). Now, it is connected with two words which are linked to the first two of the definitions - both in the same way.

If anyone is certain about the links for the third word ... I'd be grateful.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Maty - I like you now have links to first and second words but am still baffled by the third one.
Has anyone seen devadolly novalis and PG recently? Very little N&C going on!
what about :
white(law)
hart(ford)
(trip)lane = tri-plane?

:o)
Thanks Crofter.
Hello Everyone,
Have been out and about for a few days, I'd only picked up on the middle link, so am grateful for others who "squared the circle"", thank you.
Ringer, I agree, where are the stalwarts? Devadolly may well have been in the Metropolis, last week she asked for eateries in the Kensington area, but eschewed my suggestion!! Novalis has not been present nor offered apologies for absence for a couple of weeks now. PG has also not reported in, despite the fact that we need reports of minipgs progress!
Ringer, how has the enforced holiday started, have to say however I am glad you stayed out of that nasty DC. Service in Completers Corner is far slicker, and certainly not self-service
Strangely, here on Costa del Geriatrica the weather today has been glorious, despite all the radio doom and gloom of rain everywhere-else! It started to rain for a while at 18.00, but long after I'd mowed and enjoyed a G&T on the patio!
Hi DocHH et al
Am very envious of both your weather and G&T, though if I were allowed to embibe a port and brandy might be in order to match the weather here. Started raining today at about 11am - just after I'd hung out a line of washing, and has poured down ever since. Temp outside about 15 degrees. Ty Crofter for those suggestions - I'd been working along those lines myself but am still not 100% happy with it. Also trying the Children of Fiji 70s quiz but not getting very far.
Hello everyone, sorry not to have been having a peek. Horrible EV all about that silly pastime! Didn't get the bit that is confusing everyone, didn't think it necessary.
Now DocHH you are not listening................I said I knew of places in Kensington, but we are NOT intending to be any nearer to Kensington than the RAH from which we are high-tailing it back to Clerkenwell straight after the concert. You did mention a place off Regent St which we shall certainly investigate if we are in that area. What we wanted was info on eaterys in the Harley ST/Wimpole ST/ Marylebone areas for 6.30pmish civilised drinkies and then on to supper for a catch-up with friends who work in that area, help still needed as we have been told to choose. Monday night sorted as we are going to the excellent Thai restaurent on Museum St so it will only be a qiuck totter home after a few post prandials in the nearby pub!! Off on the 10th but won't be missing any EV's.
Ringer you seem to be getting the same weather as us, Himself is unbearable as he can't get 4 days without downpours to get the rest of the big bales, he won't answer the telephone these days as it is all our horse customers asking when the haylage is going to be ready. Poor you not being able to drown the awful weather with a suitable tincture!
Where is Physicsgirl and Mini?
Hello to all and welcome to the madhouse for AHearer and wantok.
