I've just been reading a really ignorant discussion board on another website where people have been blaming swine flu on 'dirty foreigners' and it got me thinking... what diseases have originated in Britain?

jennyjen...I have some sympathy with the members of that discussion board, in that on the whole Britain IS a dirty place compared to other European Countries and by and large, the people in other European countries are far more hygienic than the Brits.
In my opinion there is greater numbers of people infected by the H1N1 virus in the UK, because the Brits are complacent about it and this has been borne out by threads I have read on AB.

I am talking about British people saying that dirty foreigners are bringing it here, sqad, I'm thinking either you've misunderstood my question, or I've misunderstood your answer!?
I was trying to put the point across that these British people are blaming dirty foreigners, but how many diseases have we spread to other parts of the world.

it's not really a fair question - we conquered most of the world - wiped out whole civilisations and gave the rest some pretty lethal deseases ... but that was before people knew how to combat it

It's true that asia seems to originate many of the new strains of flu - africa for aids - but hot, damp, strong sunlight, swamps --- and no winter to kill it all off ... where else would you cook a plague?
knowing it's there is't up to us all to take precautions ... and as squad says ... we don't - my surgery has only just started to provide hand gel - and the kids toys are festering in a corner
