OK, 33d driving me nuts. I have ?N?E?R?G?L and assume last three are GAL (Gaul without U), but all I can come up with is INTERREGAL (in + terre + gaul without u), and I can't find that in any dictionary.

And 46d is also eluding me. I have P?T??.

Chambers gives Interregal as

Between Kings
It is INTEREGAL, as you worked it out. Field of Cloth of Gold was where Henry VIII and Francis I met in 1520.

46d is PETIT. Pet = indulge + It = Italian, e.g. petit four, petit pain
Sorry, meant to type INTERREGAL, as emeritus said

Phew! Thank you, now I can get on with enjoying the rest of my Bank Holiday weekend (though clearly I could do well to spend some of it brushing up my history). Isn't it funny how sometimes a clue (46d in this case) will fox you however many times you run through the options? Wood for the trees and all that.
Interregal is in the Chambers dictionary.
Definition: between kings.
