Quizzes & Puzzles Rules
23 Answers
Dear Q&Per's,
Are these rules satisfactory:
Asking a Question:
1. Before you ask a question please skim through questions already posted, or use the search function provided. The information you need has already been posted on the site. If not continue as below.
2. Enter the name of the Quiz/Puzzle in the Question title field
3. In the main body users should indicate on which Clue assistance is required.
4. Users should then try and give as much information as possible about the clue for example:
a. The Clue itself, for example: “Where is the best place to ask and answer questions?”
b. The number of letters required, for example: (3)/(10)
c. Any letters which have already been worked out in the answer should be presented as: T-E/A--WE-BA-K. Here the “/” represents a space or a separate word and the “-“ represents a missing letter. The secondary acceptable form is to replace the “-“ with “?” instead, for example: T?E/A??WE?BA?K. The answer to the clue is, of course, “The AnswerBank.”
5. If you receive a helpful answer please indicate with the “best answer” option and offering a thank you. This should be done on the original thread, not in an entirely new thread.
6. Please keep chat to the ends of answered questions – “chat” threads in Quizzes and Puzzles are very unpopular with those who are still searching for clues and answers.
Answering Questions:
1. Please be helpful and kind then offering answers, solutions and suggestions. Suggesting another user should “try harder,” will not be tolerated – quizzers of all abilities are free to use the website as they please.
2. Although thanks should be forthcoming from any users you have helped demanding thanks for your help is not in the spirit of The AnswerBank.
3. If the question h

1) I think your first point under 'Asking ' should read:
1. Before you ask a question please skim through questions already posted, or use the search function provided[, to see if t]he information you need . . . (my suggested amendment is in square brackets)
2) In 4c I would suggest that the preferred indicator of an unknown letter should be the ? because long sequences of - such as ------- are very difficult to count.
3) Your post has been prematurely trunkated.

It would be preferably to be more concise with the rules. I suggest-

Question marks for me too please.I have difficulty enough with the new site being too big and wide and have to enalrge everything as it is to be able to read it without trying to decipher tiny little dots and dashes .
I like point 1 though on "Answering questions" .There are some people who don't take part in Q&P but just come on here to trawl through threads to moan ,criticise and call people idiots and dimwits .Hopefully they will think twice now there's a report button .

Question marks are preferable.
I prefer K's shorter version- more chance of it being read and noticed.
The search function is not working properly so it won't help those looking to see if their question has been answered previously.
I have just tried to search some crosswords from the weekend that I know have been discussed - ev 878 and telegraph 26027 - only old and irrelevant links come up. It might be better to bring back the old google link which did work, until this can be sorted out.
On the plus side the site is a lot faster, and I can now look at those orange/pink avatars without feeling queasy - it just shows you can get used to practically anything!

Thank you for requesting feedback
I generally agree with Kayakamina's comments - (KIS Keep it Simple ) and definately ? for mssing letters
in addition (as mentioned elsewhere)
- there are still issues with referentail intergrity with regard browser back page function
- search facility not good i'm afraid
- I would much prefer 'crosswords' to be a top level topic and not a subsection of Q&P (save checking two areas)
- Thank you for reinstating the relative page 'next' scrolling facility
Good luck with the project

Question marks, please!
I for one am more than happy to keep 'chat' to original threads, as I'm often accused of abetting kind AB'ers that ask me personal Q's & thereby take up space on the page. To answer a thread & add "How are you?" or some such (starting said "chat") is acceptable - IMHO.
That said, should I see such a personally addressed thread, I would never be so rude as to ignore it, but will also try to pass along that it shouldn't be done.
Further to this, being able to keep up with all posts in a thread via the refresh of "Recent Posts" was extremely helpful. The current set-up of "Latest Posts" = "Recent Threads" is not & I sincerely hope that this facility is one that the AB team are going to reinstate asap.
Were comments made regarding the font used noted (to be done) or ignored? Difficulties arising from the use of capital I (eye) and lower-case l (ell) & the reading of ' m (em) ' for ' rn (r n) ' shows a lack of professionalism in the house style - again, IMHO.

The search facility is a number one priority, I would have thought, since AB is advocating that people should search for previous questions, similar to the ones they wish to raise, before submitting them. The fact is that the AB search facility does not function correctly, producing only a few very old threads. Surely, a search for a given topic should produce ALL matching threads, in date DESCENDING order.
