I get issue, but would you mind explaining susan - that was my gut instinct, but couldn't see why.

11a returning us = Su + san - an abbreviation/brief spell of sanatorium

Returning us = Su Hospital = san(atorium). No idea what the 'for brief spell' has got to do with it.

the brief spell part of the clue indicates that it's an abbreviation i.e.san instead of sanatorium
