Thaneships enabled me to get the answer to 18 down - PORTMAN (an official - the bearing is Port and the attendant is man! Finished now. Johnalex your answer made perfect sense but there doesn't seem to be such a word as Portern. I think they should find a meaming for it. Thank you again. DD
