EV 886 Toss Up by Warbler

Hello EV N&C Wine Clubbers,
Once I'd got the quotation it all fell into place! A little more taxing than last week, but not too much! I was distracted for a while at 20ac, I thought the definition had been spelt wrongly as the cryptic seemed to work for anotherdefinition which was the grid entry!
Oh well, off now to cook dinner, chef will partake of a little malt! My normal Tempranillo to accompany!

I had little or no ire about 22a, in fact I'd like to have an Aga. Have probably crossworded-out today, all the Sun Telegraph, plus the Sun Express! I bought the latter as I am recording for the sunday issue of the Talking Newspaper on tuesday and it yields lots of amusing articles, and all the gossipy bits about celebs! In an hour's worth of cassette tape I aim for at least 45 articles, nothing too serious, using three Readers alternating this means Listeners have a continuous change of voice, and it hopefully keeps them awake!

Good evening you two clever clogsis! What on earth does a Swedish cooker or a Middle Eastern potentate have to do with harsh words or a tier of seats???
Have done about half of the clues but they are not yielding any ideas re the quotation or what one does with the oddities, will have limited time to get 'done and dusted' this week as am off on hols on the last shuttle to Gatwick Wednesday night and really must get down to some decision making as to which of the clothes strewn about the spare room I should pack - and that is just Himself's!
Will probably spy on you all when I use the computers to transfer each section of photos to my flash sticks, but will probably need some heavy hints about this one if I am to finish by Tuesday (or go mad not knowing....)

Hello Devadolly,
2 questions, What is that Swedish AGA or Rayburn normally called, not uncommonly present in a farmhouse kitchen, 5 letters, and what is IRE when the front letter of the AGA is moved to the rear? That is also a heavy hint, MARK my LUKE warm words!
Hope you finalise EV before you leave for the Amazonian expedition, Herself and I each do our own packing for holidays! We normally end up with a combined weight allowance that is permitted for 1 of us. I used to tell her, "if you can't carry it, you've got too much!". She now agrees that seems about right! Will you be packing puttees for Himself to stop the snakes crawling back up his legs!

Hi Devadolly!
Just to add to Doc HH's hints --- I've just come from the JOHN ( too much detaiil, I know ). You could say I was Bach-ing mad with Passion after this one!! That is my first and last word word on the subject.
Hope you finish this before you set off. Most importantly though ---- Have a great time. I sincerely hope you have the trip of a lifetime.

Novalis, Doc thank you for the hints. Novalis, I'm hoping it is not all Greek to me when I say I am a secular person who really should be more spiritual and go and listen to more of Himself's choir performances! Am presuming that is to do with the quote.
Doc, I am not doing well here, it is the difference between the scientists brain and the rest of us! My AGA is called the AGA and I can't find any ref to a gaa or toves will have another try later - nice long wait in Rheumatology this pm but no ref works unfortunately!
Thanks for the good wishes for hols, me let Him pack.......I have to be seen with him in civilised society!! Always mix everything up in two cases then if one goes missing one of us isn't grubby or naked until it is found. If we packed to our luggage limit I think we would have to pack most of the household goods + next door's too. No puttees his wellies would have been the thing but far too heavy so he will just have to tuck his trousers into his socks!

Hello All
I really thought that I might be first to solve this week's but at least it looks like I'm not the last. Thought it was very easy though I do question the definition in 12. My big red book gives this to be plough, not UNploughed land. Did anyone also spot the typo in the grid - 39 instead of 30? Devadolly - I do hope you have a fantastic time. It's half-term for me but have decided to stay at home to catch up with sleep and housework (and marking). Blood Brothers was a fantastic show - next week it's Chicago.

Hello everyone, it took a while for me to link "Toss Up" to what was happening in the grid, but as luck would have it, the penny dropped! Not sure which way up though!
I have to say Ringer that I missed the incorrectly defined 12a, and Christiana number blindness made me miss the typo of 39 rather than 30! Mea Culpa! Ringer, use Half-term to your best advantage.
Devadolly, hope the wait in the Rhuematology dept wasn't too long, have a realy good holiday, with more ladders than snakes. Last time we we went to Egypt 2 years ago we went o St Catherines Monastery, OK but not exceptional! Hopefully Petra and Jerusalem will be more impressive.
Christiana, pleased you are still ploughing through. Am sure you will complete, FIRST you need to really sort out the quotation, then LAST resolve how the 8 entries are modified!

HI Doc H H. Haven't finished or got the quotation but sort of fell into what was supposed to happen with the 8 clues, mostly because of worrying away at the incorrectly defined 12a and its intersecting 5d. Not far to go now, so may have put the cart before the horse, or some such, but it hasn't seemed to matter.
