Is everyone missing the last 5 clues down? or am I drastically missing the point?

I must be missing the point as well as I also have no clues for the last five!
Also, I'm completly stuck as I've no idea what the puzzle is about! I've filled in all the answers but don't know what to put around the perimeter or even where to start.
Thick or what?

Can anyone (please!) give me a clue as to what the puzzle is about, I have all the letters (that can be filled in from the clues) on the perimeter, but I've NO idea what the subject is...

@ Ripper: rather than puzzle over the special six clues you may find it easier to concentrate on figuring out what words fit the letters you have in 22A and 19D. They are a well-known phrase and should drop your penny nicely.

Ripper, I guess I have the "advantage" that I only associated the phrase with this one quotation. I suggest you Google the two words (together in quotes) along with the placenames you already have. As a further hint - since the penny dropped for me I cannot stop humming the tune.
