AMOMUM. A plant of the ginger family, including cardamom and grains of Paradise. Oedipus famously killed his father and married his mother. Amo, of course, is Latin for "I love"

Of course - silly me! Many thanks - guessed the mum bit but wouldn't have got the rest!
I think 5d is Milton. One of the greats named in Gray's Elegy, the theme of the puzzle, as no doubt you've discovered
