How lateral are you lot?

A man walks into a pub, and asks the landlord for a glass of water. The landlord gets a shotgun from under the bar and points it at the man. After a few moments, the man says thank you to the landlord, turns around and walks out.

Why did the man go into the pub? I know the answer, but thought you lot would have fun working it out. Just ask me for the answer.
