Actually, it was sillier than that: I saw where that letter was missing, but for a while STILL kept looking for that letter where the rest came from too.

I suspect you guys are right that the 'missing' letter was a tad sneaky but an outside possibility is it was missing from the end of the very first definition (making it an adj) - not perfect but just about possible at a stretch. Especially as i'm not convinced about the word play in another clue but hey ho.
