I was mortified when I read the rubric! A non-English quotation, plus my newly acquired 7th edition 0f ODQ not cited as containing it! Imagine my relief when I discovered it was! Time for a glass or two of Tempranillo!

Hello Devadolly,
It starts in the most north-west square, i.e. 2 squares to the left of the square containing 1. Have got to do my December Accounts soon, as have no more work until 3rd February! So because of that I can probably do January accounts at the same time as the December ones. Am waiting patiently for my bus pass, should arrive by 18th of this month, assuming the Council actually do hold to the 10 "working days" that the private sector observe!

Evening all. I don't have an ODQ, so tracking the quote down was a indeed bit of "a chore". If you throw those letters into Chambers Word Wizard, devadolly, it might speed things up.

Hi all. This one was a bit of A CHORE, since lacking an ODQ I was reduced to googling about for the quote. Not much of a payoff to this one, as the 4 unclued lights were somewhat random and indeed only 'hinted' at by the quote.

I'd like to claim that the peripheral quote was "Cogito, ergo sum," but that would be putting Descartes before....

Even in my shattered state ( late night, early morning ) I mangaed to get through this. It wasn't as "horrid" ( or something along those lines ) as I first thought it might be once the most important anagram was solved.
After last night's quiz I was given two bottles of red, one French and the other Argentinian, both a Shiraz. The French is most palatable!! It has just washed down part of the unwanted raffle prize I was given ( a lovely, thick gammon steak ).
Hope you are making full use of your bus pass DocHH. In this area ( Greater Manchester ) we can use it on the trains as well. Unfortunately our local direct route into Manchester has been closed in preparation for the Metrolink tram system.

Hello Everyone! have done all but two clues but am totally in the dark about the quote in what I am assuming is a fairly elderly language! Heavy hints about 8d & 30a would be most welcome.
Thank you for your suggestion turnerjmw, but I fear that Chamber's word wizard and I don't seem to be on the same wave-length, I just don't seem to be able to 'drive' it.

30a is two words in the same language as the quote round the edge.
8 d varies in one word from a famous quotation from "Animal Farm".
The author of the edge quote can be found, as TurnerJMW intimates, by anagramming the title of the puzzle.
I shall be using my bus pass tomorrow for both bus and train in order to deliver some cards.

Hello everyone,
Novalis, the bus pass arrived today, well within the Council's 10 working days promise! I will test drive it tomorrow! Apparently Nationally it starts at 09.30, but locally here at 09.00. No chance of using it on trains locally though! I also have no desire to be a TWIRLY!!
Devadolly, 8d is as Novalis said a quote from Animal Farm, minus one word, and incidentally there is a rumour that the pub cited in that book, where the farmer went for a drink is one very local to me! 8d is actually 3,3,3,5!. The omitted word in the quotation to which Novalis refers to is 6 letters long. 30a is 7,4, and can be found by using the site turnerjmw has cited.
Dr b, you are forgiven, but only because it rendered me de hors de combat with chuckling!

Just back from London, late last night. A wonderful whirlwind time there!. Got the bulk of this done on the plane home, apart from the quotation which I've now found. Yes, Devadolly, a very ancient language. I am flummoxed by 2 intersecting clues 29a, and 26d. A city??, a yoga type???. Any indicators welcome. You'll never be on here, DocHH, with all the potential FREE gallivanting.

Hi copelander, a tricky pair, those. In 26dn, the assembly is Greek, minus a mediaeval Latin number 11 in the middle, leading you to the Taj Mahal. 29ac is a three-letter tree (a ligature by extension), then a pair of briefs (first five letters of an old African country - think Kilimanjaro)

Hello, here I am Doc H H. Seem to be exceptionally busy at the moment, so only intermittent looks at EV. Fortunately it seems easier this week and I have most of it filled in though haven't tried to find the quote yet.

I love the reindeer card. Someone sent it to me a year ago and I kept it to cheer myself up with whenever things got hectic. It still makes me chuckle!

I'm looking forward to applying for my bus pass when I eventually get settled in Lincolnshire. Things are going slowly at the moment - and will no doubt grind to a complete halt now Christmas is so close. I'm not really expecting to move before about March anyway and even then I will spend part of the year in the Algarve for the foreseeable future. Incidentally It is bitterly cold here today, so I'm getting a chance to acclimatise.

Yes Devadolly, you can use your pass on the Metrolink trams. I do frequently when I venture to Bury.

Hello all; our seasonal greetings added to the pile. I enjoyed this Chore and have had a good puzzling weekend after adding the Listener and Mephisto to the mix.... not much else got done! I think we were lucky in the compilers though and am not anitcipating this will be a regular attainment. We visited Leeds yesterday to enjoy the limited German market (there is a better one in Manchester I recall) but it did have a beer hall and genuine oompah band - and we followed this with a concert by the Pogues. Alcohol to the fore in a Big Way - although more quantity than class! Thank you for the tram tip use for the bus pass - excellent if that can be used by all pass holders; the all London pass (ie incl tube) is only available for those who are resident in the various Boroughs.

Greetings. More often than not, I've found MynoT's offerings pretty tough, but I found this quite accessible. Although I'm still not sure about the wordplay in 28 and 36 (even though I have no doubt about the required lights), some interesting and new (to me) words combined with a good helping of cleverly misleading clues made this a delight.
