Could someone please explain how the clue to 8 down works please?
I have WELL I NEVER DID as the solution, but I don't see the clue to the last word.

I can see that WELL I NEVER is the surprise referred to in the clue, but I just can't see how DID is arrived at, apart from actually being part of the clue.

OK, I see it now. Thanks.
I see the logic, but the clue says 13 letters, not 4,1,5,3 as 'well I never did' would require. Just a misprint?
Peter, this is yet another example of the lowering of proofing standards re the Times crosswords. If you're doing it on line, as I am, it shows the number of letters as (8)...
