Have finished this old Times x-word, but just wondering about some parts of some clues. 9a answer is 'churchgoing', clue is 'Having a liking for hymns? Chap with this may produce a piano' (11). Where does the piano come in? 11a answer is 'salter' (I think). Clue is 'One preserving so wants change for nothing' (6). How does this work, apart from a salter being someone who preserves meat or fish with salt? I had the letters S - L - E - . Any help please?

9a chap with this = chap with churchgoing (i.e. the solution) = remove the CH from 'chap' = ap = a piano(p)

it's one of those clues where you work backwards from the answer

11a so wants change for nothing = replace the O in 'so' with 'alter' (change)
11a salter - delete o (nothing) from so and add alter (change)
Chap with this (ie churchgoing) means lose the CH from CHAP and you're left with a piano (A P)
9a chap with this = chap with churchgoing (i.e. the solution) = remove the CH from 'chap' = ap = a piano(p)

Thanks everyone. Working backwards from the answer was just what I was trying, and failing, to do . . .
