I'm not sure if I remember what we had to do for this crossword, as I sent it off ages ago, but, I think that certain letters were ignored in the clues which then had to be highlighted.
23d may well be howdah
w=weight in the middle of "that" = "ha" and ignoring "adh"
....and then again I could be misremembering it !
