It depends on the crossword - sometimes there is a competition and the answer is in those words?
shaded questions, or squares?

Thank you Sara3 for the correction, I meant squares. Thanks boxtops for the answer however there is no competition here except for all correct answers and the winner's name is drawn out of a hat. The prize is a Cross pen.

Friday magazine by Gulf News issued every Friday in the UAE
I thought the shaded squares in a crossword grid were to separate the words
Lil, I think gollywog means that sometimes a crossword has lighter-coloured squares (not the black ones!) - which spell out a quiz answer. That's how I've responded!
Ahhhhhhhh that makes sense
boxtops - I looked at the Gulf News crossword but could only see black squares
