I agree with 'pauper' as the answer but can't see where the 'R' comes from in the wordas play. The clue quoted in the question is actually "to THE castle" not "to castle" as given above..Also, I'm stuck on 24ac. By overcoming bias, he's become more familiar(4). T?B?. Is it TOBY and if so, why?
Toby is 'familiar' version of TO BIAS
R = rook (castle)
