I'm not sure how I feel about this puzzle.

The end product (1d) was apparent early on , due in part to a very helpful hint from Dumpynose, but the calculation was made more complicated by me with an incorrect checked letter.

Thanks for the link, mintyman! I agree wholeheartedly with kayakamina. *If* my solution is right:
(a) "Q33 in a 27" is a non-integer which is imprecisely defined
(b) Dumpynose has definitely pushed the limits too far in the answer to 18A, which does not properly fit with 14D.
Or maybe my solution is wrong...

Thanks Roslyn. I had the same as you for Q33 in a 27, though the answer turns out to be an integer after all. I was on entirely the wrong tack for 18, but all is now sweetness and light.

One last uncertainty! The answer to 22down is a plural form. I don't get the 'inadequate evangelical' wordplay so am unsure whether it should end in 'S' or 'I'. Any help gratefully received.
