Listener 4076: Labour by Elint
45 Answers
Tough debut by Elint this week. Very good surface readings with definitions not always directly linked in Chambers, which I felt made it tougher. I was only mentioning a few weeks back that with the available gadgets and the fixation that every word has to be defined directly in Chambers, the Listener is becoming solvable faster, but I am proved wrong this week. 9 across and 29 down I liked a lot.
I was lucky to get the 2 words about half way through which helped me on the way. Thanks Elint

They do connect with a significant word, but not in any thematic way, and by the time they emerged they were completely irrelevant to getting the theme, which I spotted far earlier. I cannot imagine they threw light on the puzzle for anyone.
i sort of agree with what you say scorpius. I found the extra words way before getting the 2 names. In fact I knew one had to be there so it helped along the way with the extra letters. So from this viewpoint there were no help, but it is the listener. We are used to extra difficulties even if not totally relevant. Some quotations, for example, that have appeared are only there to confirm themes rather than lead to the next step of PDM(s).
Yes, the 2 surnames were a little peripheral to the main process, but they did create a nice symmetry in the extra words, with a pattern I don't think we have seen before Bravo Elint !
I also agree with daagg about the preponderence of medical terms (I counted 6) - there are no details for Elint on the Listener website (yet), but his name rearranges to Neil T - any ideas ?
