Here is a link to 'Round pound and penny' by Doc.
http://thespectator.n...om/epaper/viewer.aspx
An early start as I have been invited to a special assembly at my Grandson's school.
Fortunately the puzzle was reasonably straightforward except for the SW corner & 43a!
Of course, with it being set by Doc, reference to Brewer is necessary, and the theme is
certainly applicable to me!

All my answers are satisfyingly Brewerish, including 23 where I concur with you on the most probable. My Brewer is the 1894 edition (I said it was old), reprinted in 1993 with a facsimile of Brewer's handwritten preface, picked up for £1 in a pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap. At the moment, I don't enter the competition for this one, so I appreciate your input.
Than you for the links Kayakamina & Mintyman. i have finished at long last but am not altogether sure of some of the words on the perimeter, as some of them aren't listed in the online version of Brewer.
I would like to buy a copy for future reference - can someone confirm that this is the correct item :-
Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase & Fable by Chambers (ed),18th edition, Aug 09, hardback Amazon price £16.72(picture of Shakespeare in bottom right corner on cover)

I have most of the unclued lights around the perimeter, I hope. Need to confirm bottom left corner as N*LL, the second letter being the 'round' vowel. The unclued light that follows is not given in the ancient Brewer I have access to online (I don't have the latest Brewer), but presume it is the only word that can fit the pattern N*SE* (5 letters). Need to confirm 'parts of face' in new Brewer. Re 23 ACROSS, I've gone for synonym for 'mists'.
Would appreciate assistance thanks.
