Why do people bother to answer posters who dont have the courtesy to even give the clue, let alone thanks.

I do, only because some of them do answer, perhaps are new, don't realise yet.

If they come on here they must surely notice that people do actually give clues, with number of letters, so I think it is laziness when they dont. We who answer actually encourage that laziness as they find they will still get the answer regardless.

Fair point grasscarp, I would rather that the OP corrected/added to their post than someone just gave the answers regardless.
