Here is a link to the crossword which is on page 57

http://thespectator.n...om/epaper/viewer.aspx

As was suggested by novalis last week, the theme and title of
today's puzzle was predictable, but none the less enjoyable.

Thanks, Graudian
Thanks for the links Graudian & Mintyman. This was my best ever time for finishing! Got the unclued lights very early on and the rest followed smoothly. Think I'll attempt the EV as I have some spare time, I don't expect to get very far with it though - it looks very difficult!!
The names went in from memory - no reference books or googling needed today!
I had to google for the correct penultimate letter in 19a.
Wow ! Even I finished in record time ( for me !) today. lol ;o)
Hi

I presumed 14ac edible tuber from final parts of sago (3) is oca but I don't get the word play?
tapiOCA
many thanks
Graudian and Mintyman,
Many thanks for the links. Will attempt this later. Just wish I could predict the results as well!!
Thanks for the links folks - with this serial number I'm hoping for a footie theme !
In two week's time, can we look forward to a particular summer? Any bets?
Odds on I should imagine Zita-Green. As with Kayakamina the names went in from memory. I'd say that my grandparents told me all about them.....but I'd be lying through those of my own teeth which I have left.
Me, too, Novalis; they were my salad days, sigh.
The other half solved all the clues but was kind enough to let me come and do my theme crunching bit - however when I asked him for a specific set of names he rattled them off like someone on the top of his game. I, of course, am far too young... Numbers tomorrow - the excitement is palpable!
Thanks for the links. The quickest ever, I think, but very enjoyable and brought back some happy childhood memories.
I finished it yesterday - never managed a Speccie in one day before. But did have to look up some of the names, even if I am of a certain age. The only thing I know about football is that the ball is round, and that's wrong, it should be like a well-known cricket pitch, as Doc might say.
Belated thanks for the link - have only just got round to it - too busy packing and finishing EV
