Good morning all. Most will be off to a flying start with this puzzle, some nice clues. I have a 'leg hold' which only took a small matter of time, I "think" I've got the theme from 22ac (If I'm correct) it'll be familiar to some thematic grid solvers.

All the best.

Hello Tweaker,
How are you faring, I thought the title of this weeks EV was appropriate! If you haven't finished yet, just carry on!
Afternoon all. This was fun. More excellent stuff from Piccadilly, following his well-crafted Swallows and Amazons puzzle in EV903. He does like his jumbles, though!

Hi DocHH,

I did put this to one side to carry on with the Listener for a while. I like to swap between doing, puzzles, reading, radio, t.v, music. It stops my mind hitting brickwalls, and I concentrate better when I'm less focused on just one thing! Though I am a bit baffled by a couple of Listener clues.....
Hi all,

Perfectly enjoyable although a rather obscure theme on this side of the Atlantic. I Googled a group of what seemed seemed to be obvious unclued lights and was lead right to the appropriate source, at which point all fell into place. And it's only 8 am! Well, plenty of work to do in the yard on this sunshiny day.

morning dr b.

it's dull/raining here in Suffolk - East Anglia. What part of the states are you from?

I'd like to get up, leave and disappear to the US. New Mexico suits me.
Tweaker, I'm in St Louis, Missouri.

If you want to disappear, New Mexico would be the place. Have you ever seen the movie "Off the Map"? Not about New Mexico per se, but set there and lots of scenery of the state. Also, a good movie!

I'll check the film out. I'd much rather have a green card entrance (rather tough to get though), I would constantly be a bit paranoid if I got caught without one! I emailed NM government they were kind enough to send me a tourist brochure and a fantastic detailed wall map too.
NM looks fantastic, I rather like the architecture and the state is sparsely populated as far as I've seen.

I don't know - in 'the simpsons' cartoon - Apu is an illegal immigrant, however he'd managed to stay in the US for 10-12 years and applied for citizenship and got one. I know that the cartoon is fictional, but the process might be true?
Ten years ago. maybe - today, not a chance, I'm afraid.
Hello All
I'd got a couple of the unclued thematic answers, and spotted in the grid what I thought might consttute the author. Herself asked how I was getting on, this was a rhetorical question, viz "when can I have the paper so that I can do the GK printed on the reverse side of EV?"!!! I told her how far I had got, she rattled of a couple of lines, then a dash to ODQ, and it was plain sailing from then on in. Apparently it was something she remembered from schooldays.
Weather here has been pleasant today, but windy enough to justify not doing anything in the garden. Yesterday was scorching and we were foolish enough to garden rather than go to the beach! We then sat on the patio until after 22.00 finishing off the wine after dinner.
Dr b, what does it feel like having your daughter your side of the pond again, is she talking to you as much as when she was here?
Hi everybody!

A very enjoyable puzzle with, as stated by DocHH, a most appropriate title. It helped that I know the work from days of yore. Back now to the Speccie because I haven't really had time to look at it properly.
We took this with us to the cricket at Durham which was, sadly, rained off :( However, the clues were so kind that we passed the time quite happily and the jumbled words surfaced from those long distance days - as others have mentioned. 22ac was the last to come but it was only a matter of time as the rhythm was well embedded even if the words had suffered a 'craft' moment. The title pdm has only just clanged - nice one Piccadilly.
Hi DocHH; my daughter was here in St Louis for a whirlwind 2 days, followed by 5 in NYC (with Mrs dr b) then 5 more in StL before heading to NYC for good. It seems like while she was here she was catching up on appointments (haircut, dentist, optometrist, GP, a few specialists; all so dad could pay the tab, of course), so did not see too much of her. She did bring back goodies from all her travels (cookies from Harrod's - sorry, biscuits, pasta from Italy, olive oil from Greece, etc.). Now she is in NYC working two magazine internships. Not an easy business to break into these days.

Tonight we are going to a play in St. Louis's Forest Park; "Hamlet", by a promising young playwright of yours. Always a highlight of the summer, is free Shakespeare in the Park!

Coasted along nicely through this one, well constructed puzzle and not too tough even with all the jumbles.
Dr b, such are the joys of parenthood. My rather technical upbringing means there is no way I can appreciate that up and coming playwright!

Novalis, I thought you might be embroiled in marking preludes, if not now, it can't be too far away. I don't think you'll have too much difficulty with Speccie 1967. The lady concerned thinks it's an absolute gem of a crossword.

Jogler, any form of team sport is a no-no for us, so we are hoping that by escaping the UK on the 18th for a couple of weeks we can avoid the chavvish involvement plus media hype and analysis that is likely to be prevalent here, unfortunately it'll be elsewhere too, but hopefully in a foreign language!!

dr b. unless I had a sex change and a dodgy passport I'll give the idea of NM a miss!
The h-g is a sucker for sport in any shape or form... his cup runneth over at the moment - test cricket, golf and, the icing on the cake, darts! I have been dragged to watch an amazing array of live sport, including (n.b. dr b) baseball, american football and ice hockey (Stanley Cup). Who says that brains and brawn can't mix - albeit slowly in both cases! That notwithstanding, I am with you DocHH when it comes to the forthcoming hoopla.

I'll take my chances I think. A thunderstorm has started..............(I need out).
Took a while to understand the title which was amusing
Hi DocHH!

Examiners' meetings are three weeks today and tomorrow ( later than normal this year ) in Physicsgirl territory. You were right about the Speccie. A well set, many faceted gem.

Dr B, I always understood that's what fathers were for. That notwithstanding, I bet you were more than pleased to see her. Hope her internships go well. As for our promising playwright --- he should go globe-al.
Hello Novalis, I suppose the theme of Speccie was a cut above some of the others! Shame we haven't seen, Devadolly, Physicsgirl, Crofter, Copelander and others for a while, they haven't even tendered apolgies for absence! I fully appreciate Christiana is otherwise occupied with moving, but am still waiting for the invite to the house warming party!
