Sorry for late appearance but I was away for the weekend. After a quick run through of the pre-amble I thought this one would have me stumped, but drove on, knocked a few of the easy ones over and started to recover. With one or two slips along the way, managed to catch on to the theme an finish off without too many silly mistakes. Nothing further to add on 1ac other than it is clearly a case of the mid being off. Doc HH, very jealous of you leaving the country, if I drive past another house with bunting and flags I may well join you!
Just driven from darkest Yorkshire to the big smoke and on the way we had a childish game of counting cars with flags. The h-g had all the pairs and I had the singles. We were a little surprised that there weren't more; the tally at the end was 132 cars with one flag and 120 with two. Three vehicles had four, a couple three, and there were three remnants in the central reservation. As the entire population of the UK seemed to be on the road with me there is obviously slightly less fever than originally thought - it just sticks in the eye rather effectively! I have just been awarded my prize......or rather, my pair of prizes. Incidentally, I too discovered the eleven variations but could only find the ones that were used in the BRB.

I thought that it was just moi and Herself that were averse to this current abomination! We are grateful we do not have a monopoly on the aversion! There is tennis here this week, on the sunshine coast, a sport which as far as we are concerned is somewhat more acceptable and civilised, but it seems to be ignored on national radio or TV! Unless of course, it is Wimbledon based!

Sorry about the non-appearance lately - I seem to be playing "catch-up" with EV, completing them over a week after publication. Have caught on to the theme of this week's but struggling and think I might head for DC, with not a single red/white flag in sight - phew! I too can't understand the nation's obsession - my only consolation is that it will soon be all over!

Welcome, welcome to DC all of you, even the Clever Cloggsis, not a single country flag in sight (though there is a Union flag available should it be required for anything), fridge and red wine rack fully stocked as is the larder (no waitress service) and there are a couple of dishes ready for the Bar-b-que should anyone be willing to cook - and don't look at me, I'm tired!
There, have managed to reduce the thread to the realms of lunacy........................ as to the EV itself, am plodding along and have 3/4 of the gris looking respectable but am not having any thoughts on the awesome preamble, definately still have a spots on the brain as the hints are way above the barnet.
PS No vuvuthingies in DC either but the tennis net is up, the croquet lawn has been mowed and Mini's paddling pool is out!

Regret that as I don't get waited upon hand and foot normally, I shall be declining your kind invitation to the DC, where self-service seems to be de rigueur! "Completers Corner" is also adequately stocked, and also has silver service attendants (didn't want to be non-PC! huh). As for an invitation to be the Bar-b-que chef, no ta, the staff do that! I applaud the fact that like us in CC you have banned the Vuvuthings and any footy related flags.
As for a heavy hint on the theme of the odd columns, I used creased, AndrewG-S used stumped, knocked, re-cover, slips, mid-BEING-off, and Kayakamina found 11 ways of being DISMISSED. The theme in question wasn't one that was prevalent at our Alma Mater! Although there may have been the odd one or two, our lot preferred getting rather muddy. I was at an Expo in Birmingham recently, and our A/M were exhibiting, apparently the Purple Onion still lives on, but has been the target of arson attacks on numerous occasions!

DocHH, you gem (despite not wanting to be a member of DC - nothing CC can do will out-do the quality of food provided in DC, I know all the producers personally and they only send their best, it is so good that a single service would not be enough to try and savour all that there is to offer). One of my favourite ways of passing a summer afternoon (equiped with the requisite repast of course), will now look again!

Andrew - I hope you find it easier to get to the O2 than I did. Travelled down with a friend early on A Saturday morning, parked up in North London, and then discovered the Jubilee Line was completely closed. A very interesting journey ensued!
Back to EV - am still reclining in DC although nearer the door than before. Am stumped (am I correct?) on 21d. Can only find one word which fits the letters I already have and I'm blowed if I can make sense of the clue (it's the needlework one)
Am singing in a concert tomorrow evening - thought I'd escaped you-know-what - but the conductor is making us wear red or white shirts for the second half. I suggested we might need black armbands by then!

Ringer, when I was at Uni, we had to attend lectures, seminars and the odd meeting of guidance lead by a lecturer! Dump the first letter of that and add a "S"econd to the front. That will give you the definition of 21d, but not the entry. This anagram solver will give you the definition from Dr B's clue.

Having recovered from whatever dreaded bug was ailing me I've now returned to the fray as far as this is concerned. Now have the go-getters but, despite the always excellent hints above, the quote is still completley eluding me as is the adjustment indicated by the extraneous letters. Any pointers to either or both even at this late stage would be most welcome,.

It is the pairs of consecutive letters which lead to the quotation. Two words (hyphenated)
from the quotation should be placed below the grid.
If the 'order' of the letters in the middle column are rearranged they will correspond with the entry under the grid.
