As usual it's probably fairly obvious, but I cannot see it.,

Not sure about hunted, although its an anagram of end and hut. I don't have my copy with me, just going by a completely crossword illiterate friend's empty grid, but I remember I did not have that one. Can't remember some of the answers I put in for cross reference of letters. I have managed to find all the word ladder, most words I have never heard of but got by referring to the dictionary and process of elimination and addition of letters. Is there supposed to be a connection between the first and last words (I think Stephen and Matilda)?

There was a King Stephen who married Matilda back in 1125 but the preamble didn't seem to indicate that we should look for a connection, did it? I am alone in finding this puzzle just a bit unsatisfactory? I think I just wanted to be puzzled for longer, the way I usually am!!!!

I am also suspicious about this Stephen and Matilda thing - the title 'Six Further On' might have some other implication apart from Matilda being 6 words on from Stephen in the ladder. The only thing I have found is that Matilda was 6 years younger than Stephen but I don't think that is relevant.

Which Matilda is it? Henry I died in 1135 succeeded by his daughter Matilda but the crown was seized by Stephen precipitating nearly 19 years of civil war.

Matilda was supposed to become queen when her father Henry 1 died in 1135 but Stephen became king then. Matilda controlled the country for a short time in 1141 when Stphen was captured - that was 6 years on - is that the point??

Following on from your comment, Slaney, why do they offer Oxford Dictionary etc when we were advised to use Chambers as a primary reference in a recent Inquisitor 'Occasional Notes'?

Indeed NIMROD, but I'm not sure I want another copy of Chambers either.

Obviously the prizes are not the reason most of us do the more advanced cryptic crosswords -it's the intellectual challenge. What made the Inquisitor different was that the champagne was a fun prize, and in my case made my pastime more acceptable to the family who are usually underwhelmed by the whole thing.

Apparently the Indy were to change prize to the dictionaries, but because of complaints, this is a one-off & the champagne will return for 1136.
