The "c" "n" "u" and "i' are re-checked and correct.

I originally thought it might be ''confession''..........

Very few words fit and those that do make little sense.

C comes from Topical as answer == Relating to matters of interest

N comes from Octants as answer == One-eighths of circles

U comes from Overhaul as answer == Examine or gain upon

I comes from Raise as answer == Heighten or being up

N (final) comes from Preference as answer == Liking one above another

Shame no-ones been able to work this out for you after 4 postings.
It could be an error.
Your other answers seem okay although I'm not convinced about RAISE and PREFERENCE (Preferring?). If the latter is preferring though I think it makes your last word end in I which seems wrong.

Thanks for that help. I had some concerns myself about 'raise' but have failed to do better!

Will give it one more go - will also trying working with 'Preferring' - it may well be a single letter tweak cracks it. Thanks.

Re-check: Satisfied that Preference is correct as it would leave letter ''i'' as final letter in unsolved clue...

25a - I think the clue is misprinted! It states 'Heighten or being up' but "Raise' fits and I feel the printed clue should read 'Heighten or BRING up...'

I was trying to make Admission match the other clues that you put your answers to . I got Mundane instead of what you had, which would give an A at the beginning, and Traverse instead of overhaul to get a middle S, but completely stuck with your third letter which is N, as this seems definitely correct. I give up. It is just that confusion is not acknowledgment of crime and admission is.

To be truthful a bit cheesed off with this crossword, once I released there was one (likely) misprint in a clue.

Confiteur is worth pursuing.
But ithat then makes RAISE wrong, so maybe the heighten or being up/bring up clue isn't a misprint!
If confiteur is right what letters do you have for definite in the 'heighten' solution?

Don't think so,sandyroe. I haven't seen the crossword but I think that if teh answer is CONFITEUR not CONFUSION then the I in the RAISE solution becomes an E, so the middle letter is E which rules out RISEN.
Can someone scan this crossword in for us?
It's not easy doing it 'blind'.
I still have a feeling though that there may be a fundamental error, either in the crossword itself or in the info provided by STARMACK
