Almost finished, but completely stuck on 35a. Cockney bum suffering torment, against protesting strongly? (two words) a??st?n?etr?n. This crossword is based on anagrams. Also could anyone confirm that 2d. is Tartan?

Many thanks K. I had never heard of that before. By the way, I agree with your comments on the other site re this week's Mephisto, I've normally cracked this by Sunday lunchtime. After hours of research I only finished it yesterday, and I'm still not sure it's completely correct. We shall see what this Sunday brings?

Mephisto is usually number 4 in difficulty in my weekend crosswords after Inquisitor, EV & Azed.

Raced = ran; dry = TT; one = an...anagram = tartan = all-weather track material.

Thanks quizmonster, I had assumed it was tartan as little else would fit, but couldn't for the life of me work out why.
