I've so nearly completed this puzzle. I have the theme and the four unclued entries. I've cracked the cryptogram and found its interpretation - but I'm stuck on 16D! I know what its extra letter is but I still can't get it. Any tips gratefully received.

It begins with V and ends with PA

Thank you Ardboe. Finished now. I had misled myself as usual by trying to start the word with col and end it with spy (agent)! I now get the hollow bit so I appreciate your giving me a hand!
Maybe you can help! We have the relevant interpretation of the cryptogram but can't quite see how you can get it from the two normally clued entries. Can you give us a clue please?

Hi Bertandjoyce,
One of the normally clued words becomes these once cremated, and the other was made from these woody growths in the past. Hope this helps.
Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been celebrating my birthday.
I've just highlighted the two normally clued words, but I have looked in every dictionary and reference book I have and cannot find any reference to the down clue being anything to do with what you say. I'll take your word for it.
BradleyGas - if you look up the singular of 'woody growth' in Chambers you will understand.
Sorry - that should have been 'woody growths'!

Hi BradleyGas,
Sorry if I was confusing. I was trying to give a hint without giving too much away and spoiling the fun! If you've found the right 2 normally clued words (top right corner A & D) then you're looking for the results of burning one of them and the kind of plant that was used to make the other in the past. I didn't find the definition in Chambers when I looked up my normally clued word. It revealed itself in the 2nd definition of the word I had assumed was its interpretation! Hope this is more helpful.
Thanks for the explanation - the down answer still seems very obtuse. We had surmised the link with the across answer but felt that it was a little tenuous! We are away soon and were pleased to have it explained before we go!
Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
