9ac "Did bridge journalists' errors make for this perhaps?" I have c*o*s*d so the answer seems to be "crossed". I can see the "cross" = "bridge" and "ed" is the journalist (but why plural?). But I just can't see the "make for this perhaps" part. Where am I going wrong?

Thank you. I think it's not a very good clue. Pity, because most of them are rather good. There seems to be a change of style recently in many of the Jumbo cryptic crosswords , the only ones I do. Some are really elegant and some I find quite amusing. But not this one....
