Should I audition for the part of Belle in Beauty and the Beast?

My local theatre company is holding auditions for the show in November. There will be a professional director and MD. I am 22 and have not had a lead role since primary school when I played Tallulah in Bugsy Malone.

There is a lot of competition for the role of Belle; other girls with a lot more experience than me and who have been leading ladies before. I'm don't think I stand much chance up against them, but at the same time there are reasons why I think they might pick me. I think I could do it, and do it well, but what if I'm wrong?

My question is, I guess, should I audition for this part if I have doubts as to whether I can deliver? It's been so long since I've done anything like this; what I freeze up on stage under all those lights? What If I can't remember so many lines? Are these worries that even the professional girls will be having that I should just brush aside, and go in and do my best, taking the role if they offer it to me? Or if I'm not 100% confident that I'm up to the job, should I just audition for chorus?

What have you got to loose, I would go for it. If you don't get the part you might get to be in the chorus. You will never know if you don't try, and you might regret it.

PS you can have all the self-doubt you want on an anonymous website, btu suppress it firmly when you audition. Envisage yourself as the actress actually playing the role, not the bundle of nerves you feel inside. That's what acting is for!
