Listener Crossword 4104: Merchandise by Adam

I have a nice full grid, but not a clue what's going on. I don't want to know what the solution is, just that someone out there has seen a regular pattern (or whatever) that makes sense of the thing. Apologies if this thread has already started somewhere, but neither searching the site nor searching with google give any hits.

I totally agree with the sentiments expressed above by dr b, although to be fair Adam is by no means the first or only guilty setter.
Surely the required denoument should come through thematic elements of the puzzle itself and not the pre-amble.

I've just finished the grid, apart from 37a, so think it's now time to start reading the ODQ for hyphenated words that could be the merchandise!

like many of you I've been staring at a completed grid for too long - some nice, some tricksy clues, but eventually all satisfactorily explained. But no quotation rearing its ugly head.

"Regular" normally refers to every second or third (or 4th or 5th) letter, but that doesn't work here, so what can it mean? There's a Q there, looking for a U, and that doesn't seem to fit into any "regular" pattern. Contendo et contendo.

Hello.
I'm usually happy to give up when I'm beat, but this crossword has really rankled me. I took a long time to fill the grid and now I've spent even longer staring at it. Even with some hints here I find myself in the stupid camp.

Just to take a bit of a break from quotation-hunting, can someone please explain the wordplay to 1ac? And did anyone else think the wordplay to 25d was a bit dodgy?

25dn - cracking in the sense of dividing, but it seems to me there's a redundant "s". I don't understand the wordplay for 1ac either, though I can see how the first 2 letters might be derived.
Despite Ruthrobin's assurance I can find no "regularity" to make sense of the across clues. I've tried 2s, 3s & 4s forwards and reversed. I've even made a template of the grid with holes cut out at appropriate intervals.

I really think that I've found the relevant quotation in ODQ, but still can't see it in the grid. I haven't managed 37a yet, but am just about to work on that. Is there some link to 13d in the quote? I wouldn't use exactly that word myself, but it is close to how the person in my quote could be described if he was looking for the raw material purposefully!

I'm firmly in the camp of those who believe that there should be a connection between the themel and the final denoument. Apart from that I thought it was a pretty fair offering.
