Thanks Georgia! But why? You're certainly right: caretaker=acting; but how does the clue work?
ace = The act of hitting a golf ball in the hole with one's first shot.

I'm a little concerned about the 'acting' answer to this clue - 'acing' seems pretty flimsy. Not sure of the answer but I think it might have something to do with 'Aston' who, after all, was the Caretake in Pinter's play! But beyond that ...
